The Uni of Essex Winter Fayre

Last night saw the return of the annual Uni of Essex Winter Fayre; a truly magical event, free of charge, whereby the university’s various clubs and societies put on festive stalls and live entertainment was provided courtesy of the Rebel student media team. The ultimate way to get students and staff in the Christmas spirit in the run up to the end of term next Friday (and enjoy a well needed break from the drag of essay writing!) Wrapped up in woolly scarves with a warming drink and bratwurst in hand, students and members of the local community alike roamed the German-style Christmas market from 4-8pm soaking up the merry atmosphere.

Each of the 120 societies went to town, throwing themselves into the festivities. Each stall hosted its own mini-competitions and sold merchandise and tasty treats to promote their membership. Favourites include the Theatre Arts Society (TAS) who sold the popular Naked Calendar- a big hit each year!

As part of the evening, TAS also offered a sneak preview of their upcoming panto production Puss in Boots. In spite of the sub-zero temperature, members of the cast, including the Playboy Bunny troupe (Louise Day, Ellie Lawrence, Danie McIntyre and Adam Pardy) and Dame Fiona Finkleberry (Callum Marshall) gave exclusive performances, much to the delight of the crowd! Tickets for the panto which plays next Wednesday through to Friday can be purchased direct from the Lakeside box office here.

The event also saw exclusive performances from local bands who put their twist on festive classics, as well as carol singing and traditional Romanian and Bulgarian dances.

Fayre-goers could also meet Santa in his grotto and have their picture taken in a true to life snow blizzard photo booth.
