University can be hard to get the grasp of, even in my third year of uni I am still learning the ropes. But with this brief student survival guide, you can easily survive university and maybe even pick up your own tips on the way.
Get to know your campus
This one is particularly important if you are studying at a university with a big campus. Don’t end up being late to lectures just because you don’t know your way around. Walk around and take a mental note of which buildings are which. Be a tourist at your uni!
BUDGET! BUDGET! BUDGET! I cannot stress anymore how important this one is. One of the struggles of being a student is always having no money, don’t fall into the trap of spending all your student loan at once then scraping pennies by the end of the term. Make budgeting easier for yourself and get a prepaid budgeting card such as Pockit. A prepaid card allows you to put a certain amount on the card each month for things such as food, toiletries and most importantly alcohol. You are even able to download apps to keep tabs on what you have spent.
Know when to stop
When it comes to drinking and nights out don’t overdo it. Trust me, been there, done that, NOT fun! Learn when to say no to alcohol, not only will it save you from a deadly hangover from hell, but your wallet and dignity will really appreciate it as well. Don’t struggle to make a lecture or hit a deadline because you’ve been having too many drinks the night before. Know your limits and when to take a break! You aren’t any less fun just because you aren’t drinking as much as other people.
Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation to the person sat next to you in a lecture. Getting through lectures is so much harder friendless. Having friends on your course that you can study, do work with and remind each other of deadlines definitely comes in use. You never know, you may even make some friends for life!
Always remember your much-needed student discount
Even on my third year of uni I sometimes forget to carry my student ID around with me, meaning I’ve missed out on the well-deserved student discount. Make sure to always keep it in your purse or wallet, many places offer up to 20% discount for students. McDonalds offer students a free cheeseburger with their meal! Yeah I know, dangerous!
Prioritise your studies
I know it’s hard to balance your social life and uni commitments, however, you need to remember the reason why you are even at uni in the first place. Make sure to find a balance between the two, so you are always on top of your studies while socialising and having fun, if you have a job add that to the mix as well. It may be tempting to go on that night out when you have an assignment in at the end of the week, but you have to make sacrifices sometimes to make sure you get your work done. In my experience, it’s WAY more fun going out when you are on top of all your studies, feeling relaxed and not stressing about them.
